Based on the widely accepted VDC-200A four button video disc controller, the VDC-212 is presented in response to requests for a unit accommodating additional inputs. With the ability to select from up to twelve segments from a video disc, the VDC-212 is intended to fill a range of applications in the areas of museum exhibits, point of purchase displays, classroom use, and forensics. Indeed, wherever it is necessary to provide a fool-proof method of controlling a video disc player, the VDC-212 is worthy of consideration.

Each of the twelve pushbuttons is assigned a start and end frame number from the video disc. Pushing the button will then instruct the player to play the segment of the disc bounded by those two frames. No encoding of the disc is required. The frame numbers are stored in nonvolatile memory, which is retained when the player is off. Frame numbers are programmed by using the buttons on the face of the controller or any personal computer loaded with a communications package such as a Windows, ProComm or Microphone. The frame numbers may be easily changed in the field at anytime.

In a typical application, up to twelve pushbuttons are mounted on the exhibit or display surface for activation by the public. Connection to the external buttons is via common RJ-11 modular telephone connectors, making installation a simple matter of plugging the components together. The pushbuttons may be located hundreds of feet from the VDC-212 if desired. For use in classrooms and training situations, the twelve buttons may be used directly. This results in a very compact and straightforward system consisting only of a monitor, disc player, and the VDC-212. The pushbuttons, both front panel and external, illuminate to indicate the selection is being played.
